Planning a move can be a huge headache! Moving in general, can cause feelings of anxiousness, anger or even sadness, as you are leaving your home and moving to a new location. If you are not taking the time to plan your move accordingly, it can become even more of a hassle. Here at Quality Moving & Storage, we strive to help you in any way possible when it comes to your move. With this being said, for those who are placing up those fragile items, they are going to want to take some extra precautions to ensure these items are protected.

There are two aspects to remember when it comes to packing fragile items:

  1. Always do this in advance! Never hurry this process as the more that you hurry, the higher the chances that you are not doing this properly, which can result in many of your items becoming broken upon moving.
  2. Ensure that you are utilizing the right tools. The right tools include:

  • Packing tape
  • Packing paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Heavyweight boxes to support the weight of these items
  • Pliable cardboard
  • Scissors

Once you have these items, you are going to find that you can pack just about any breakable in your home to ensure that once you arrive at your new location, there will be no broken glass to deal with.

How to Pack Breakables

Each type of breakable is going to be wrapped slightly different to ensure that it is safe while moving. Here is just a few of the most common breakables that are packed in a move and how to do this:

  • Plates: Be sure that you are packing these vertically in small or medium boxes. Each plate should be wrapped in bubble wrap, and the box should not be over packed, as this can cause the box to be so heavy that it is dropped and everything breaks.
  • Glasses: Wrap these individually and place paper inside of the glass to help minimize open space. You will want to place these into a box, and use wadded paper to feel the negative space around the glasses. The idea is to ensure that the box is as tightly packed as possible to avoid movement.
  • Picture Frames: Frames should be wrapped in packing paper, and for larger frames, these can be wrapped in a moving blanket. You can place these frames into a box, however, each frame should have a paper or blanket between them so that no frames are touching each other.

Key Points to Remember

Here are a few key points to remember when it comes to packing fragile items:

  1. Do not utilize newspaper for wrapping items, as this can leave black smudges on these items that is hard to get clean.
  2. Old towels are sometimes used as moving protection, however, these are not a wise choice as they do not provide much cushion.
  3. Always label your box fragile so that our movers are aware of which boxes to exercise extreme caution with.

Once these items are packed, you will find that a lot of the nerves and anxiety associated with the move is put to bay, as fragile items are often a large chunk of any move!
